Along the Icefall.

crevasses on a glacier at sunset

“Sunset on Les Bossons”. 80×80cm. oil on canvas

It is a fairly long one day hike, a very popular one but if you go there off season you are likely to be on your own when you reach the top. This “summit” (2589m) called ‘La Jonction’can be seen as a confluent of two glaciers, or the point at which you enter the realm of high mountains. Past this point you have to be an alpinist and in fact the glacier is so chaotic over there that it is safer to set foot on it from a different place. But this is not the point; you hike up there for the pleasure of the trail of course as it takes you on both sides of the mountain and opens up on spectacular views but mainly for the sudden discovery of the breathtaking view when, a bit exhausted let us be honest, you reach the top, the very ‘ Junction’. Then you can sit down on the rocks and enjoy being here.
